Abstract

Milling-machines; milling-cutters reamers.- In a rota.ry cutting-too such as a reamer or milling-cutter, the cutting-edges are so arranged that spaced between a set of equally inclined cutting-edges c is located a second parallel set of cutting-edges c arranged on helices of the same hand, but of different inclination from the edges c. The cutter is formed on a milling-machine wherein the table T, movable transversely in relation to the milling-spindle Z. carries a casing 1 supporting in bearings a hollow shaft 2. The latter carries a toothed segment 3 engaging a vertically-sliding rack 4, which has a pin 6 engaging in a block working in a slotted arm 28 pivoted at 7 in a bearing fixed to the longitudinal slide S. The arm 28 is adjustably connected to a. second arm 41 supported on the pin 7, and oscillated by means of a crank pin 10 on a driven shaft 14. The hollow spindle carries a spindle 32 which is provided with a driving plate 16 coacting with an index pin 17 secured to the spindle 2. The blank A is secured by nuts 21 to a mandrel 20 carried between centres 22 and 23, and connected to the spindle 32 by a coupling- sleeve 19. Scales 44, 46, are provided for determining the angular adjustment of the arms 28 and 41. In operation, the end b of the blank is brought beneath the profiled milling-cutter H, and the blank is oscillated through the arms 41, 28, rack 4, and segment 3. As the slide T is moved to the right, Fig. 2, the pin 6 approaches the pivot of the arm 28, and the oscillation of the blank gradually decreases and a tapering groove is formed in a manner similar to that described in Specification 290,761. Owing, however, to the angularity of the arm 28 relatively to the arm 41, the movement of the pin 6 along its arm causes a gradual rotation to be imparted to the blank, so that the edges C, C<1> formed in the blank are helically arranged as shown in Fig. 1. The slot in the arm 28 may be suitably curved in order to vary the form of the cutting-edge. When one set of grooves has been milled out the blank is reversed end for end on its mandrel, and the oppositely-tapering grooves are formed in a similar way.
