504,829. Grinding; work tables. HERTLEIN, G. J. Sept. 28, 1937, No. 26299. Convention date, Oct. 3, 1936. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A metal working and like machine tool has a base carrying a pair of relatively movable superposed slides each of which has associated therewith two independent manually actuated control means for effecting relative movement of the slides, one of said control means including lever mechanism for effecting a gross relative movement of the slides and the other including a screw mechanism for effecting a micrometric relative movement of the slides. The work table or slide 16 is slidably mounted on an intermediate slide 15 and may be roughly adjusted by means including a hand lever 44, pinion 41 and rack 40. Slide 15 is movable on a lower slide 14 and carries a rack cooperating with a gear 27 adapted to be rotated by a hand-wheel 32 and shaft 29. The slide 14 may be adjusted along two rails 12 each formed with an inverted T-slot 13 in which is inserted the head of an eccentric clamping device carried by the slide. In addition to the rough adjustment provided by the lever 44 and wheel 32 the slides 14 and 15 and the slides 15 and 16 may be given accurate relative adjustments by two similar screw devices each comprising a tubular part 54 keyed to an extension 51 of one slide and adapted to be locked therein by a binding screw 69 and a second tubular part 55 similarly connected with an extension 50 of the other slide. Mounted within the part 54 is a rod 56 rotatable by a hand wheel 57 and having a screwed rod 60 co-operating with a threaded portion of the part 50 which houses a spring 61 to take up backlash. The part 55 is provided with adjustable collars 70, 71 mounted one on each side of the extension 50 and adapted to cooperate with the extension to limit the relative movement of the two slides during the rough adjustment by the lever 44 or the hand wheel 32.
