An engraving and copying machine comprises a slide 24 which carries a tool spindle 34 and a copying stylus 32 and is mounted on a bar 20 to be movable in two directions parallel to the planes of work and pattern tables 38, 48, the bar 20 being movable with the slide 24 also in two directions transverse to the sliding direction of the slide and parallel to the said planes. The machine is characterised by means 37 removably attached to the machine and co-operating with the slide or the bar to prevent its movement, or to prevent its movement beyond a position intermediate of its extreme positions, in at least one of the directions of movement parallel to the plane of the tables. The bar 20 is supported by a parallelogram linkage 16, 18 on a vertically movable slide 14. The cutter is belt-driven by a motor (not shown). The work 44 and pattern 46 are carried respectively by the tables 38, 48 rigidly linked at 50, 52. The table 38 is adjusted by nut and screw mechanisms actuated either by handles 56, 58 or by ratchet levers 72. In operation, the slide 38, and with it the slide 48, are adjusted by known means to the correct height and the cutter and work positioned to cut a line " a." The linkage 16, 18, the weight of which may if desired be counterbalanced in known manner, is then locked by the link 37. The ratchet device 72 for the screw 62 is set by a graduated dial to give the required advance, i.e. the distance between successive lines " a," " b," &c. and the cutter is then rotated while the slide 24 is reciprocated. The work and pattern are advanced after each line has been cut, the total advance being indicated by a second graduated dial. Should undue resistance be encountered in the movement of the slide, a spring clutch, between the slide and its feedscrew, slips. In a modification, the link 37 may be attached to the members 20, 14 or may be in the form of an adjustable abutment 166, Fig. 6. Movement may, alternatively, be prevented in a direction at right-angles to the previous examples by a rail 168, Fig. 7, contacted by a roller 170 attached to the toolholder. If the pattern and work-tables are not linked together, separate feeding means are provided for each slide.
