Lathes; steady rests. -In a multiple-spindle lathe having a sliding and rocking tool-holder, a set of tools is provided for each spindle and all the sets are mounted equidistantly from the fixed axis of the holder, about which it is rocked by a single member such as a cam. A slide i, mounted on a fixed bar h and prevented from rotating by a lug engaging a bar o, Fig. 4, is reciprocated by a cam m, Fig. 1, and has mounted on its boss the tool-holder which is rocked about the axis of the bar h by means of a cam q, slidably keyed to the cam shaft b and carried with the slide by the arm w. The oscillation of the tool-holder is such that the tools k<1>, k<2> first operate simultaneously on the work g carried by hollow spindle f and then the tools k<3>, k<4>. An adjustable inclined plate x or a former, secured to the bar o, may be used instead of the cam a for taper turning or copying respectively. Devices such as s for drilling, screw-cutting &c. may be mounted on the bar h and operated by a cam v. Lugs r, carried by the slide, are used to support long work pieces during turning.
