Lathes; steady rests.-A multiple-spindle, screw-machine comprises a fivespindle indexible work-turret and a five-sided sliding tool-carrier supported on an axial shaft and guided by means of rearwardly-extending shafts one located below the carrier and the other adjacent the top of the carrier. The machine comprises frames 9, 10 connected by an intermediate bed 11, the frame 9 supporting the housing of the work-spindle turret 13 which carries five rotary spindles and is indexed in a bearing 12. The tool carrier 18 is mounted on a sliding shaft 16 which bears at one end in the work-turret and at the other in a frame member 15. A shaft 17 passing through the shaft 16 imparts rotation to the work-spindles. The tool carrier is of pentagonal form each face having a tool-clamping slot 18a and the top face being arranged horizontally. A bracket 19 depending from the tool carrier is guided by means of a foot 20 on a plate 25 secured to the bed 11, the sides of the bed being curved outwardly to carry chips &c. clear of the machine. The bracket 19 is also bored to receive a, bushing which carries a shaft 26, which bears in the member 15 and is reciprocated axially, by means of a cam 32 on the main cam-shaft 33. A stop rod 28 secured to the tool carrier carries adjustable lock-nuts 30 which engage the frame 15 to provide a positive stop for the tool carrier. These nuts are set in accordance with the size of the cam 32. A shaft 142 secured to the tool slide 18 also has a bearing in the bracket 15 to serve as a further supportfor the tool carrier 18 and a rod 146 extending from the top tool-holder through the bracket 15 is provided with lock nuts 147 which act in conjunction with the nuts 30 to limit the forward travel of the tool carrier. The frame carries side supports for cross slides 102, 104, respectively, the slides being actuated through lever mechanism from cams 110, 115 on the main cam shaft. A pair of cross tool slides may be mounted on each side of the machine. In this arrangement tool-holder supports 117 are mounted in T slots in the slides 102, 104, and are fitted with tool holders 120. A vertical tool slide 131 is also provided. This is actuated from a lever 121 which is connected through a lever 122 to a link 125 pivoted to a cam slide 126, which is fitted with cam plates 129, 130 coacting with a roller 135 on the tool slide which carries compound slides 138, 139, the latter being provided with a steady roller 140 and cutting tool 141.
