[Class 83 (iii)] An automatic lathe &c. comprises a support, two oppositely disposed swingable tool carriers, a third reciprocable tool carrier, a common cam member for operating the tool carriers and actuating members between said tool carriers and the cam member which are adjustable in the support to vary the extent of the movements of the tool carriers. The machine comprises a work spindle 40 through which bar stock is fed by a reciprocating-gripper device of ordinary construction operated from an overhead camshaft 32 which is driven by gearing from the work spindle. The camshaft is supported in bearings carried by brackets 8, 10, 12, 14 and also supports a pair of swing- able tool carriers 114, 116 which operate on opposite sides of the work and may be provided with forming and cutting-off tools for making nut blanks. The tools are positioned intermediate the ends of the carriers and the lower ends of the latter are adjustably connected to the forked ends 146, Fig. 7, of actuating members 142, the rectangular ends of which are adapted to fit between ledges in the machine frame and the pivot points 138 of which may be varied to vary the effective throw of the cams 108, 112 on the cam drum carried by the overhead camshaft. A reciprocating tool carrier 204 is arranged horizontally, Fig. 3, and may carry a drill D for operating on the stock B. The tool carrier has a vertically arranged actuator 212 with an adjustable pivot 216.
