713,042. Lathes. BECHLER, A. April 2, 1952 [April 6, 1951], No. 8446/52. Class 83 (3) An automatic lathe or like machine tool comprises a continuously rotated main camshaft 5 supported in fixed bearings 4 on the bed 1, a vertically adjustable support 12 for a hollowcamshaft 16 surrounding the shaft 5, and means 27 on the main camshaft 5 for intermittently coupling driving means 21, 22 to the hollow camshaft 16. One or more cams 17 on the camshaft 16 operate the tool turret indexing-mechanism, the chuck or the ejector operating mechanism &c. of an automatic lathe. One or more cams 9 on the shaft 5 operate tool slides &c. The clutch 22 may be an electro-magnetic clutch and the cam 27 operate a switch, or the cam may operate the clutch directly. Alternatively, the clutch 22 and pulley 21 may be mounted on the shaft 16. One revolution of the shaft 5 occurs during each operating cycle of the lathe.
