Abstract

A turning machine has an indexable tool changing device in the form of a turret 1 with a plurality of tool stations optionally with a workpiece centre station and mounted for indexing movement with respect to a support member 2. Thrust means 19, mounted independently of the device 1 in alignment with a position occupied alternatively by the tool or centre stations, is selectively operable to couple with the tool or centre 3 to provide axial thrust and/or rotation thereto. The thrust means 19 comprises a stepped double acting piston assembly which supports a shaft 38 for the axial movement. This shaft 38 has coupling teeth 42 to engage complementing teeth 10 associated with the centre for rotation thereof. <IMAGE>
