Abstract

322,020. Dehn, F. B., (Producto Machine, Co.). Sept. 13, 1928. Milling-machines are, provided with spindles laterally movable to bring the cutters into operative relation with work carried by turrets mounted in front of the spindles. Work, such as the yoke members shown in Fig. 2, is held with pieces on each face of an octagonal turret 65 provided with a notched flange 69 and a V-recessed flange 68 on which the work is retained by spring controlled end plungers 66 and is further clamped at the operative station by levers 73 yieldingly actuated at 82 from a cam lever 80 and sliding rod 79 from a cam on the shaft 28 driven through worm, chain, bevel and spur gearing from a chain 16 driven by a motor 13. The worm is driven through a clutch 25 held in operative position against the action of a spring 99 on a sliding rod 98 by a latch 100. A setting handle 97 is provided. The turret is mounted on an arbor journalled in a support on the bed and provided with a ball thrust bearing and is rotated' and indexed by a notched flange 84. The locking-bolt is normally held home by a cam-operated' lever and is withdrawn by a spring prior to the locking of an arm, carrying a spring pawl, by another cam lever. After machining, the work is stripped from the turret by a spring finger 101 and discharged down a shoot 103. A gang of cutters 39 is mounted on a spindle 38 journaled in a bearing 37 vertically adjustable on a head 37<a> on a slide 30 movable horizontally in a bracket on the frame. The outer end of the spindle is supported in an outboard bearing 40 vertically adjustable on an arm 41 projecting from the slide 30 through a slot in the guideway. The spindle 38 is driven through the gearing shown in Fig. 3 from the motor 13. The stub 52 is fast on the slide 30 and the swing arms 50, 51 allow for the vertical adjustment of the spindle. The spindle 56 is linked by a bar to the stub shaft 52 and slides in a slot 58 during the feeding of the slide 30 by a roller 32 and cam 33. The return of the, slide is effected in part by a cam 33<a> and in part by a chain and spring 34. The spindle may alternatively be mounted in an upper bearing 44.
