Abstract

104,833. Carver, J. D. Sept. 25, 1916. Turning.-A compound slide-rest is arranged to give a succession of cuts with one traverse of the saddle. The arrangement is particularly suitable for screw-cutting and for work of short length. The top slide 1, Fig. 1, is arranged at an angle to the axis and is grooved to receive a series of tools set and clamped by screws and washers as shown. An adjustable stop 8 on the cross-slide co-operates with a stepped abutment 12 carried by the headstock and backed up by a stop 14 mounted on the saddle. During the traverse of the saddle, the stop 8 is maintained in contact with the abutment 12 either by hand or by means of a spring and dash-pot. For screw-cutting, the leading tools take cuts of the character shown in Fig. 3, and the final tools produce the form shown in Fig. 4.
