Abstract

298,411. Pawlikowski, R. Dec. 29, 1927. Cylinders; pistons; packing. - In an internalcombustion or other engine or compressor ports 6, preferably of inclined or wave form, are arranged around the entire circumference of the cylinder at one end of the stroke to permit inspection and' cleansing of the piston-rings, and in some cases removal of the piston-rings and access to the piston. The ports 6 may be arranged in a chamber 9, which, in a two-stroke engine may be below the usual exhaust and scavenging ports 18, 19, the chamber being provided with removable or transparent covers 12. A ring of jets 15 may be arranged in the chamber for squirting cleansing fluid on to the piston-rings, the fluid being preferably supplied by an intermittently working pump. The edges of the ports 6 may be provided with wipers. The chamber 9 may contain sparking- plugs or electric lamps 44, which may be lighted intermittently by means of contacts 48, adjustable by means of a handle 51 and controlled by a bridge piece 46 carried by the piston or other moving part. An inspection lamp for inaccessible parts of the piston-rings comprises an electric lamp 41, Fig. 6<a>, arranged behind a perforated mirror 20 and carried by a handle 21. In a double-acting two-stroke engine the chamber 9 may be arranged between the two sets of exhaust and scavenging ports, or the latter may be utilized for the inspection of the piston rings, removable or transparent covers being provided in the exhaust and scavenging chambers. Preferably the cylinder liner 1, Fig. 14, is formed in two parts between which removable bridge-pieces 7 extend. The latter, preferably engage grooves 23, 23<1> in the ends of the liner and are secured at one end only. Piston-rings formed in halves are preferably employed to permit removal through the gap between the parts of the liner. The ends of the liner are undulated, the crests 29, Fig. 21, extending below the tops of the guiding surfaces of the intermediate bridge-pieces. The latter may comprise bridge-pieces 7 extending between the crests, and pairs of bridges 37 with gaps between their ends. Removal of the bridge-pieces 7 permits removal of the piston-rings, while removal of the bridge-pieces 37 also, permits removal or adjustment of other piston parts.
