Cylinders, construction of and cooling.-The barrel of a two-stroke-cycle double-acting engine cylinder is divided into two parts 1, 2, each having an integral] head. The joint may be clear of the scavenge air and exhaust ports 9, 10, but, as shown, the edges of the ports of the barrel are serrated at 11, 12 so that the ports are formed when the parts 1, 2 are clamped to a ring 8, either directly or by the water jackets 18, 19. The parts 1, 2 and the jackets are flexibly connected at the head ends by stuffing- box joints 21. The exhaust passage, which has cleaning doors, is also water-jacketed and in a horizontal engine the three jackets are connected in parallel, but in a vertical engine the cylinder jackets are connected in series by a flexible pipe 25, a separate circuit being provided for the exhaust passage. The serrations 11 forming the exhaust ports have passages for the cooling water and in a horizontal engine the two parts of the barrel are symmetrical both having water-cooled serrations. The cylinder is fixed by a flange 24 to the engine columns which may be used as conduits for the scavenge air which passes out through pipes 22 connected to the inlet passage 13 by a stuffing-box joint 23.
