Abstract

The exhaust manifold is used on a supercharged engine and bas a connection between each cylinder and the manifold. This connection forms a pipe which has its actual cross sectional area within a range of 0.6 to 1.7 times the theoretical cross sectional area of the pipe. This theroretical area is calculated from a formula where the effective area equals tbe piston area times min piston speed divided by one hundred. The area of the manifold is within the same range, as calculated from a similar, but not identical, formula. Use of these formulae ensures tbat the exhaust ports and manifold passages are not too small for the gas flows obtained.
