293,409. Fedden, A. H. R., Butler, L. F. G., and Bristol Aeroplane Co., Ltd. April 6, 1927. Valve gear.-The sleeve valves of a radialcylinder engine are actuated by cranked or equivalent shafts mounted adjacent each cylinder parallel to the crank shaft and driven by gearing therefrom. The Figure shows one of the valve shafts 14, which has a crank 13 giving combined reciprocating and oscillating motion to the sleeve valve 10, and is driven by epicyclic gearing comprising a member 17 mounted on an eccentric portion 16 on the crank shaft and formed at one end with external teeth 18 engaging a stationary gear 20 coaxial with the crank shaft, and at the other end with internal teeth 19 engaging a gear 21 loosely and coaxially mounted on the crank shaft, a second wheel 22 connected to the gear 21 engaging pinions 23 on each of the valve shafts 14.
