Latches, sliding.-Means for dead locking a mortise latch comprises a locking Lever E rotatably mounted in the latch casing and operated by a square spindle H passing freely through a corresponding hole in the lever and extending through the face of the outer end of the spindle carrying a hand-operated lever J rotatably mounted on a rose-plate K secured to the face of the door. The lever E is adapted to retain the latch bolt A in the shot position by its end abutting against a shoulder k, and in the retracted position by a projection m engaging a notch n in the bolt head. The lever E is retained against accidental movement in its operative and inoperative position by a spring- pressed detent G engaging one or other of two depressions g, h in the lever.
