Abstract

282,342. Marion Steam Shovel Co., (Assignees of Cowardin, S. P.). Dec. 15, 1926, [Convention date]. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel; spray carburettors. - A mixture of liquid fuel and air in the form of a " fog," in which the weight of the fuel-exceeds that of the air, is produced by a nozzle which comprises passages 18. 14, for the fuel and air, which are supplied at the same pressure, and a spindle 9 which operates simultaneously a valve 10, admitting fuel to an atomizing chamber 11, and a valve 12 allowing the " fog" of atomized fuel and air to escape into the cylinder. The air is admitted at 13 and through a chamber 24, the top of which is formed by a flexible diaphragm 35 attached to the spindle 9 so that air pressure tends to close the valves. The air is admitted to the chamber 11 through an annular chamber 15 and passages 16 tangential to the chamber 11. The direction of discharge is controlled by a fin 23. Pumps 27, 26 deliver fuel and air to the nozzles through pipes 29, 36, Fig. 3, the remote ends of which lead past stop valves 21, 22 to a pressure equalizing tank 28 containing a float 31. the interior of which communicates by a passage 37 with the interior of the tank 28; the float is connected by levers to a valve 35 which opens a return passage for the fuel to the pump when the air pressure in the tank 28 is less than the fuel pressure Compressed air for starting is stored in either a reservoir 34 or the top of the tank 28, the valves 22, 21 being closed on stopping. The fog is injected into the cylinders when the compression is low, e.g. 40 per cent of the maximum in the cycle, which may be between 150 and 400 1bs. per square inch, and ignited by self-ignition or spark. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also an air pump 26, Fig. 15 (Cancelled), with a piston having a displacement which is one two-hundredth part of the engine piston displacement and is driven from cams on a shaft 46 transverse to the main shaft, a finger 30<1> on the cross-head engaging the plunger of the fuel pump 27<1>; the fuel pump draws fuel from a reservoir through a pipe 26' and past a strainer 27'. Exhaust gas may be used instead of air to form the fuel fog. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
