Abstract

695,048. Generating combustion products under pressure. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES), Ltd., J. Feb. 8, 1952 [Feb. 28, 1951], No. 4819/51. Class 51(i) [Also in Group XXVI] Combustion apparatus for burning a liquid fuel such as propyl nitrate and supplying motive gas to an engine starting or other turbine comprises a fuel chamber of stepped cylindrical form having a valve controlled inlet, a combustion chamber at or in communication with the larger end of the fuel chamber; a stepped hollow piston in the fuel chamber carrying a spring loaded capsule or piston, means for compressing the spring and a fuel injection nozzle through which the fuel from the fuel chamber can be discharged into the combustion chamber. The stepped cylindrical chamber b is supplied with fuel from a tank c through a valve d. A combustion chamber e with an outlet f and scavenging valve g is situated at the larger end of the fuel chamber. A hollow stepped piston h which is open to the fuel chamber at its smaller end carries an elastic capsule i loaded by a spring j and has a passage k through which fuel is discharged through nozzle m. A slidable ram n which may be electrically operated by a solenoid is provided for compressing the capsule i and spring j. The capsule and spring are returned in the compressed condition by a claw p engaging a stem q. The claw p may be released by the core r of a solenoid s. The capsule i and spring are first compressed by the ram n and retained compressed by the claw p. After the fuel chamber b is filled with fuel the valve d is closed and the claw p released. This causes fuel to be displaced from the fuel chamber to the combustion chamber through the nozzle m. Ignition of this fuel in the combustion chamber forces the stepped piston upwards and causes more fuel to be displaced. The rate of movement of the stepped piston is controlled by the air vent u.
