Abstract
784,121. Generating combustion products under pressure. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 16, 1954 [Jan. 18, 1954], No. 1463/54. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] A combustion chamber in which a monofuel is decomposed to form a gaseous working medium for a prime mover and in which the pressure required for the initial fuel injection and the heat necessary for starting the decomposition of the monofuel are obtained from the burning of a deflagrant, has a pressure intensifier connected to the combustion chamber the increased pressure from which is used for at least the initial fuel injection. The combustion chamber 10 which supplies working fluid to a turbine 11 is supplied with monofuel from a reservoir 12 through a filter 13, non- return valve 14, control valve 15 and non- return valve 16. The pressure developed in the chamber 10 is applied through a conduit 17 on to the larger piston of a pressure intensifier 18. The smaller piston is connected to the fuel supply line 19 between the non-return valve 14 and control valve 15. On closing the switch 21, the control valve 15 is opened and a charge of deflagrant such as cordite in the container 20 is ignited. Some of the heated gases from the deflagrant pass to the pressure intensifier 18 which causes monofuel to be injected into the chamber 10 where it is ignited by the remainder of the gases from the deflagrant. Thereafter the pressure produced in the chamber 10 produces the flow of fuel by way of the pressure intensifier 18. A centrifugal switch 23 driven by the turbine 11 shuts off the valve 15 when a predetermined speed is reached. When the apparatus is used as a turbine driven starter, the speed of the starter is generally indicative that the machine being started is fully operative. The pressure intensifier 18 may be provided with a spring to return the pistons to their initial positon. The container 20 and reservoir 12 may be provided with sufficient cartridges and fuel respectively for a number of operations of the starter.
