784,122. Generating combustion products under pressure. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 6, 1956 [Jan. 12, 1955], No. 989/55. Addition to 784,121. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] A combustion chamber as claimed in the parent Specification in which a monofuel is decomposed to form a gaseous working medium for a prime mover and in which the pressure required for the initial fuel injection and the heat necessary for starting he decomposition of the monofuel are obtained from the burning of a deflagrant in a breech and having a pressure intensifier connected to the combustion chamber the increased pressure from which is used for at least the initial fuel injection has the breech connected to the combustion chamber through a conduit containing a restricted orifice and the side of the orifice nearer the breech connected with the pressure intensifier. The breech 2 is connected to the combustion chamber 1 by a conduit 3 containing an orifice 5. The conduit 3 upstream of the orifice is connected to the low-pressure side of the intensifier 4 by a conduit 6. The fuel is discharged into the combustion chamber 1 from the high-pressure side of the intensifier. The orifice 5 should have an area of between 60 per cent and 85 per cent of the area of the exhaust nozzle of the combustion chamber and should preferably be 80 per cent of that area. The orifice increases the operating pressure of the intensifier. When decomposition is established in the combustion chamber, the pressure in the chamber 1 will be supplied to the intensifier 4 through conduits 3 and 6. As the rate of flow will be small, the orifice 5 will then have a negligible effect.
