Abstract

701,117. Gas turbine plant. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES), Ltd., J. Feb. 8, 1952 [March 6, 1951], No. 5383/51. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XII] Liquid fuel combustion apparatus comprises a fuel pump, a non-return valve controlling the inlet to the pump, a combustion chamber into which the pump discharges through a valve spring loaded to the closed position and a fuel chamber consisting of a cylinder and a spring loaded piston, one end of the cylinder being connected to the combustion chamber and the other end to the inlet side of the pump. The combustion apparatus shown, which is suitable for burning liquid fuel such as propyl nitrate for an engine-starting turbine, consists of a combustion chamber i and a fuel chamber f containing a spring-loaded piston g. Fuel from the receptacle d passes through a non-return valve e, spring loaded to the open position, to an electrically driven rotary pump a which discharges through a valve r, spring loaded to the closed position, to the fuel discharge nozzle p. When the apparatus is shut down, the valve e is open and fuel flows from the receptacle d to the chamber f. Starting of the pump a causes the piston n of an accumulator to be pushed back and when a predetermined pressure is reached the valve r is opened. The opening of the valve r operates a switch t which energizes a sparking plug u. The pressure developed by the burning fuel acts on the piston g and causes it to discharge fuel to the inlet of the pump a at the same time closing valve e. It is stated that the supply of fuel from the chamber f and the accumulator reduces the size of the motor required to drive the pump a. A spring loaded valve admits air to the combustion chamber.
