Abstract

Charge, moistening.-In apparatus for supplying superheated steam to the charge, the water is supplied to the vaporizer through an atomizer which injects the water by way of impulses, air being simultaneously injected also by way of impulses. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the water is supplied at ordinary pressure through a pipe arranged along the exhaust pipe and communicating with a space 15 around an adjustable hollow needle valve 13 through which compressed air is delivered during the suction periods of the engine. The air may be supplied from a small compressor, preferably positively driven by the engine. The water is injected by the air into a vaporizer 18 which communicates with a superheating coil 19 the outlet 22 of which is connected to the induction pipe. The vaporizer 18 and coil 19 are mounted in a casing 20 inserted in the exhaust pipe. Means may be provided by which the proportions of the atomized water and air are changed in accordance with changes in the composition of the mixture. These means may consist of a rotary ported disc 24 controlling air inlets 23 in the end wall of the vaporizer, the disc being operated by a rope from the lever controlling the composition of the mixture. In modifications, the water is supplied to the atomizer under pressure, either a small-force pump being used, or the air-compressor being arranged to put the water in the tank under pressure. In a further modification, the admission of the mixture of water and air into the vaporizer is controlled by the exhaust gases, each rush of the gases actuating a flap valve to the spindle of which is attached a spring-returned rotatable valve situated between the atomizer and vaporizer.
