[Class 7 (i).] In a power plant in which the power output is produced by an expansion engine or turbine receiving motive fluid from a combustion chamber 17 supplied with air from an enginedriven compressor and with oil and water or steam sprayed by injectors 19, 20, the air compressor and the expansion engine are connected to a single-drive shaft and the injectors 19, 20 are arranged at the two ends of the combustion chamber and directed in opposite directions. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, the engine and compressor are formed by cylinders 8 .. 11 of a multicylinder unit, the cylinder heads being provided with engine inlet and exhaust valves 15, 14 and with compressor inlet and outlet valves 12, 16, all actuated by cam gear (not shown). The combustion chamber 17 is integral with a casting embodying the cylinder heads and is provided with a compressed-air inlet 22 and with an outlet 23 connected by passages 21 to the compressor outlet valve 16 and to the engine inlet valve 15. The water or steam nozzle 20 is connected to a coiled tube 18 surrounding the combustion space in the chamber 17. In a modification, the steam coil is formed by a helical thread cut in the external surface of the cylindrical combustion chamber, which is a force fit in an outer cylinder, and the compressed air is admitted around the fuel nozzle; the passage of the expansible fluid from the combustion chamber to the engine is controlled by a throttle valve. The cam shaft 30, Fig. 6, for the engine and compressor valves also actuates a pump 38 for the fuel through a lever 32 pivoted at 33 to the arm 34 of a lever 36, which is pivoted on a spindle 35 and is connected by a rod 37 to control means for varying the lift of the pump by adjusting the setting of the lever 32. The pump has an inlet 42 and an annular inlet valve 43 coaxial with an outlet valve 46 leading to the outlet pipe 45. The fluid from the combustion chamber may drive both a reciprocating engine and a turbine.
