Density and strainer separators.-The drum of a centrifugal separator is composed of two members 1, 7, and is held closed by fluid pressure means consisting of a cylinder 5 attached to the upper member 1 and a piston 8 attached to the lower member 7. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the mixture for the separator is supplied through the hollow shaft 3, and the cylinder 5 is supported by pillars 4. The cylinder 5 works in a cylinder 6 on the drum section 7 and contains the piston 8 on a rod 9 provided with a duct 12 for the supply of pressure fluid. This fluid lifts the piston 8 and depresses the cylinder 5 so pressing the drum rims 14, 15 together. The pressure fluid can be drawn off to allow the section 7 to drop by gravity so that solids can be discharged between the rims 14, 15. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the separator is driven from below and a spring 22 lifts the upper section 1 for the discharge of the solids when the pressure fluid is drawn off. The pressure fluid arrangement can be used with strainer or density separators.
