Roasting-furnaces.-Pulverized ores or a mixture of ores and coal are heated by tubular flues passing through the material. Finely powdered material is supplied by a conduit 11. Fig. 1, to a chamber 10 from which it falls through tubes 8 heated by the passage of hot gases from a combustion chamber 2 through tubes 5 to a chamber 6 and outlet 6a. The powdered material and such air as is admitted with it, together with the volatiles evolved, pass downwards through the tubes 8 and upwards through a chamber C, the, residue collecting in a surrounding annular space and the volatiles escaping through an opening 12 leading to a chamber 13 and outlets 14. Steam may be admitted through a pipe 22.
