Coking processes.-Finely pulverized coal which may be preheated, is carbonized by utilizing the heat obtained by the exothermic reaction which takes place during heat treatment. The gases and vapours generated during treatment travel with a powdered material which flows in a substantially solid stream, and serve to agitate and assist the material in its travel, the carbonized residue being in the form of finely divided particles. The mobility of the powdered coal is enhanced if it is maintained at a temperature of about 200‹ C., that is, at such a temperature that vapours or gases are issuing from the coal particles, the pipe through which the coal is passing being provided with a heating jacket to maintain the temperature at the desired degree. The pulverized coal, dried in a conduit 31 at a temperature of about 300‹ C., enters a chamber 32 and passes into a series of vertical pipes 34 in which it is carbonized by exothermic reaction. The residue is discharged into a chambar 35 and overflows into an annular passage 36 communicating with a second passage 40 having a discharge opening 37. The heat from the ascending carbonized particles is thus transferred to the incoming fuel. The volatiles generated pass with the coal and are discharged through an opening 37<1> and outlet 39.
