Abstract

372,805. Distilling powdered coal ; fuel. TRENT, W. E., 17, Battery Place, New York, U.S.A. Nov. 11, 1930, No. 33943. [Classes 50 and 55 (i).] Finely comminuted coal or the like is fed through a pipe 10 to a burner 7 to which heated air is supplied from a fan 4 through a heated passage 3 and pipe 6, partial combustion of the fuel taking place in a chamber 2, so that sufficient heat is generated to distil the fuel, the carbonized particles being carried through a conduit 11 to a separator 12. The gases carrying the lighter particles and forming a composite fuel pass out through a pipe 14 to a boiler for heating purposes, and the heavier particles settle in the lower part 15 of the separator and are withdrawn through a pipe 16. A temperature of 500-1500‹ F. is maintained in the chamber 2, and an air velocity of 500 feet per min. may be employed. In a modified process the powdered coal is showered into an upwardly moving stream of gas.
