Abstract
191,255. Duff, J. R. Dec. 8, 1921. Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-Plant for the manufacture of coal gas, producer gas, or water gas or mixtures of these gases comprises two retorts 3, 4 fitted with step grates 5, 6, each retort being worked alternately as a producer and as a disti3lation chamber, producer gas from one retort being burned in flues surrounding the other, and water gas from one retort being passed through the other. When retort 3 is worked as a producer, air is supplied below the grate 5, the producer gas passing through valve 27 into an annular chamber 8 surrounding retort 4 and being burned with heated secondary air from ducts 16, the combustion products passing by conduit 11 to the main flue 9. The retort 4, when hot, is charged with coal, valve 26 is opened, and the coal gas delivered to a foul main 24. When the charge of coal in retort 4 is fully carbonized the operation is reversed, the gases escaping by outlet 21.
