Spray carburettors.-An apparatus for preparing a mixture of air and gas for use as fuel in an internal-combustion engine comprises an expansion chamber 12 to which compressed gas is admitted by a needle valve 3 and which communicates with a mixing-chamber 1 by a main conduit 23 and by a bypass conduit 24 connected to a slow-running nozzle 5. The conduit 23 is provided with a needle valve 11, and the outlet of the slow-running nozzle 5 is controlled by a suction-actuated sleeve 6 provided with ports 6<1>, the gas from the ports 6<1> mixing in the chamber 32 with air entering through apertures 33 and passing through ports 32<11> to the mixing chamber 1. A manually-operated ported valve 2 controls a main air inlet opening into the mixing chamber 1 and also the outlet of the conduit 23, the conduit 23 being sealed when the slow-running nozzle is in action by a spring-pressed plunger 10 carried by the valve 2. The valve 2 is locked in the closed position by the engagement of a sleeve 16<1> with an arm 17 secured to the spindle of the valve, the sleeve 16<1> being disengaged when the engine is started by the operation of a, suction-actuated piston 15 connected to the sleeve by a rod 16.
