Abstract

655,547. Treating charge. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. May 27, 1947, Nos. 14092, 14093 and 14094. Convention dates, May 27, 1946, June 20, 1946 and June 21, 1946. [Class 7(ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] Antidetonant, e.g. alcohol and water, fed from a float chamber 15, Fig. 1, through a metering valve 53 and metering orifice 46 to a nozzle 12 in a gasket 11 situated between the carburetter outlet C and intake manifold M, is mixed with emulsifying air entering through orifices 47b from a space 42 connected to atmosphere. The metering orifice is adjusted manually by a needle valve 49a, and the valve 53 is urged open by a spring- loaded diaphragm 58 subject to engine suction through a conduit 67, the valve closing as engine suction increases. The spring 66 has two portions 66a, 66b which yield at light, and heavy loads respectively, and the load on diaphragm 58 is adjusted by varying the position of a spring retainer 62, which slides along splines 61 by means of a screw 63c having a lock-nut 65. The float chamber 15 is bolted to the casing 17, which is bolted at 11a to the gasket 11. In a modification, Fig. 13, the emulsifying tube 273 has a metering valve 244 and a metering orifice 275 at opposite ends, the metering valve being controlled either by engine suction, or manually by means 224 connected with the throttle valve, and the metering orifice being controlled according to altitude by a barometric capsule 282. The inlet to the float chamber is provided with a filter 255 and a groove 253 acting as a sump. In a further modification the barometric device is omitted and the metering orifice 275 is removable and accessible from outside for adjustment.
