Abstract
349,209. Regulating ; spray carburetters. ROYCE, SIR F. H., Nightingale Road, Derby. March 27, 1930, No. 9745. [Classes 7 (iii), 7 (iv), and 7 (vi).] In means for regulating aircraft engines according to altitude, the petrol-metering device, or the ignition timing, or both, are adjusted by an aneroid device acting through a relay comprising a reciprocating device subjected to the pressure from the supercharging- blower. Fig. 1 shows the general arrangement of the control means, comprising an aneroid and relay device a connected by linkage a3, a<5> to a lever c, which is pivoted at c<1> and connected also to a floating lever c<2>, the opposite ends of which are connected by a link b<9> to the ignition-timing means b<8>, and by links b<3>, b<4> to the carburetter throttle b<1> and the pilot's control b<5>. The lever c is further connected by a link b<11> to the petrolmetering device b<10>. The device a comprises a casing containing an aneroid chamber d, Fig. 2, and having an extension comprising a cylinder d<1> in which reciprocates a piston d<2>. This piston has opposite extensions e, e<1>, the latter of which is connected to the lever a<3>. Within the extensions e, e<1> slides a valve f connected at f<1> to the aneroid chamber and formed with a partition g and with ports g<1> .. g<4>. The port g<1> is constantly open to a pipe a<1> leading to the outlet of the supercharging- blower, and the port g<4> to a pipe a<2> leading to the inlet of the blower, while the ports g2 and g<3> control respectively pairs of ports i4, i<5> and i<6>, i<7> connected to opposite sides of the piston d<2>. Thus, when the valve f is moved in either direction by the aneroid, the piston d2 is caused to follow the valve and thus actuates the ignition and/or petrol controls. Fig. 3 shows a petrol-metering device, in which the flow of petrol through an orifice k<5> in a flange k4 is regulated by rotation, by means of the arm b<10>, of an eccentric member k<8> beneath the orifice.
