Regenerators. - An air preheater for steam boiler furnaces comprises two casings 1, 2 arranged one within the other, the inner casing 1 having a number of tubes 3 for the air supply to the furnace while the outer casing 2 carries smoke tubes 6 passing through the tubes 3 and tubes 9 admitting smoke gases to the casing 1 around the tubes 3 so that each annulus of air is heated both from within and without. The space between the inner and outer casings is divided by a partition 12 into two chambers 10, 11, and air, supplied by a fan 14, passes to the upper chamber 10 through the tubes 3 to the lower chamber 11 and thence to the furnace 17. Hot gases from the uptake 20 pass through the tubes 6, 9 and 9<1> to the chimneys 22. The tubes may be cleaned from soot by steam jet blowers. The passages for air and hot gases may be constructed of flat or corrugated plates instead of tubes.
