Walls; air supply, heating.- In a furnace for heating steam-generators, retorts, coke ovens, and the like, air for combustion is preheated in cavities in the furnace walls which are built up of bricks or blocks so shaped and arranged that no straight-through joints exist for the leakage of flames or hot gases. The walls are preferably built of bricks as described in Specification 296,033, Fig. 10, showing part of a wall constructed of alternate courses of bricks a<8>, a<9> of the form shown in Figs. 15 and 13 respectively. The cavities are produced by the use of outer facing or connecting bricks, and all the bricks are formed with vertical holes v joined at suitable places by semi-cylindrical depressions s to produce a honeycomb structure. Fig. 2 shows diagrammatically a steam-generator furnace in which a motor-driven fan f delivers air to the top of the hollow wall d, the heated air passing into a conduit i which extends round to the front of the furnace and is fitted with a damper d<1>, Fig. 3, to control the quantity of air supplied below the chain grate k. In a modification the air enters the furnace through a number of nozzles projecting into the space between the upper and lower runs of the grate. Natural or induced draught may be used or the air may be supplied partly by forced draught and partly by natural draught.
