Abstract

Thermionic valves. - An equipotential-cathode tube has the cathode made thermionically active by an electric heating device placed outside the tube. In the construction shown, the wall 1 of the tube is of conductive material and forms the cathode. A grid 2 and an anode 3 are arranged within the tube and are supported by a glass stem 4 which is sealed on to the wall 1. The inner face of that part of the wall which constitutes the cathode is coated or otherwise lined with electron emitting material, such as alkaline earth oxides, and this material is rendered active by a heating-device 6 placed outside the coated part of the tube and connected to a source of current 7. In a modification, the walls of the tube are of glass, and the cathode may be of sodium or other alkali metal.
