Abstract

233,378. Vickers, Ltd., and Johnson, F. G. L. Aug. 7, 1924. Projectile fuzes.-Relates to sensitive percussion fuzes in which the striker is held by a shear wire normally out of contact with a front part of a hole in the striker, the contact taking place after discharge in preparation for the impact. According to the invention, the hole c<1> in the striker C is made of such a size that the shear wire does not touch the striker either at the front, bottom, or sides of said hole, whereas, previously, the hole was a slot, the freedom from contact being only at the front. The striker is positioned by means of a slot C<2> in its side fitting a pin A<2> in the fuze body A. The striker is made hollow and of two parts as heretofore, but the firing-pin c, instead of being attached to the lower part, is made integral therewith. A cover plate G is sprung in place over the striker under a beaded edge a<x> of the fuze body. The fuze is armed by the set back of a ring F and a distancepiece F<1> when the projectile is discharged, and the subsequent opening out of centrifugal members E during flight. The striker is then moved back slightly by the air pressure until it is stopped by the shear wire, which, however, yields to the slightest blow even against a ballon fabric.
