Turning-gear .-In an electric starter, gear wheels 7, 8 mounted on the armature shaft 5 and a shaft 6 connected with the engine are connected by one or more pairs of intermediate gear wheels 9, 10 secured to shafts 12 inclined to the shafts 5, 6. As shown, the gear wheels 7, 8 are in the same plane and the shafts 12 are carried by a member 14, 26 rotatable in bearings 13, 15, 16. At starting, the member 14, 26 is held against counter-clockwise rotation by a pawl 18 engaging ratchet teeth 17 on the part 26, and the shaft 6 is driven at reduced speed through the gears 7, 9, 10, 8. When the engine is running normally, the gearing turns as a whole and the rotation is transmitted to the shaft 5 through ratchet teeth 32 on the part 14 and a spring-pressed ratchet member 33 slidingly keyed to the shaft 5. For starting by hand, a member 35, connected to the shaft 5 by a pin and slot, is brought into engagement with teeth 37 on the part 14.
