Abstract
213,967. Wilson, E. C. Jan. 8, 1923. Chain and like wrenches.-A pipe or like wrench, particularly for use in well work, comprises a number of pipe encircling segments, such as 13 - - 16, Fig. 1, adapted to be held around pipes or collars of different diameters by means of a latch mechanism consisting of a latch 21 and a lug 20, one of which has a number of shoulders 27, 28, circumferentially spaced apart. Spring means, such as a spring coiled around the pivot pin 22 of the latch 21, are arranged to press the latch towards the lug so that the latch will automatically engage behind one of the shoulders of the lug when the segments are closed about the pipe. An automatic self-closing device may be provided as described in Specification 211,302 or the segments may be closed by means of handles 30. The latch and lug are so shaped that the former ridas up over the latter when the segments are closed and engages one of the shoulders 27, 28. The latch may have a narrow shank 24 angaging between divided lugs 20 and a wide head 25 engaging behind the shoulders; or it coacts with one lug only and may, in that case, be in the form of a hook or a loop. The engaging surface of the head 25 is concentric with the pivot 22 and the shoulders 27, 28 have the same curvature so as to prevent unintentional release. In Fig. 1, the segments are symmetrically arranged the end ones 13 and 14 being pivoted to a handle 10, the pivot pins 11, 12 being offset. Fig. 4 shows a modified arrangement having three segments 13a, 14<a>, 15<a>, the first pivoted at 11<a> to a handle 10<a> and the last carrying a lug 20<a> adapted to engage behind shoulders 27<a>, 28<a> formed by openings 50, 51 in a loop shaped' latch 21a pivoted at 12<a> to the handle and moving under the influence of a spring 23<a>. The surfaces of the shoulders 27<a>, 28<a> are concentric with the pivot 12<a>, and the engaging surface of the lug 20a is made to ccnform as near as possible to both surfaces to prevent disengagement.
