Abstract
718,528. Wrenches. DALE, E. Jan. 14, 1953, [Jan. 15, 1952.] No. 1175/52. Class 61. [Also in Group XXV] In a pipe wrench comprising a pair of pivoted jaws, one jaw has a convex gripping surface the radius of curvature of which progressively decreases from the free end of the jaw to the end adjacent the pivot, the other jaw having a concave gripping surface the radius of curvature of which progressively increases from the free end to the end adjacent the pivot. As shown, the end of the handle 1 is bifurcated to form spaced parallel jaw plates 2, 3, having serrated gripping edges. Between the jaws 2 and 3 is pivoted the jaw 7 which has serrated gripping edges of width equal to that of the jaws 2, 3. The diameter of the pivot pin 5 is longitudinally stepped, the jaw 7 being mounted on the part of smaller diameter and being held to one side of the slot between the jaw plates 2 and 3 by a coil spring 8 which urges the jaw into closed position. Some of the teeth of the jaw 7 are provided on a hard metal insert 9. In a modification the jaw 7 has a hooked end.
