Application March 2, 1951, Serial No. 213,650
1 Claim. l
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches for use in turning or unscrewing round or cylindrical objects, as gas pipe, cylindrical rods and the like.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a wrench of the character described which is simple in construction, consisting of only a few inexpensive parts which can be assembled easily and quickly, but which is also durable, comparatively light in weight, handy in use, and well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing a preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a front view of a preferred embodiment of my invention; and,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing the numeral 2 denotes a longitudinal, preferably straight handle from one side of which extend a pair of lug portions 4 and 6 which are parallel and in spaced relation to each other and preferably right-angularly disposed to the longitudinal axis of the handle 2. The outer end portions of the lug portions 4 and 8 preferably are bifurcated and pivot pins 8 and I0 respectively are extended therethrough. One end of a link member I2 extends into the bifurcated end portion of the lug portion 4, and the pin 8 is extended therethrough.
A bar I4 has a substantially straight main portion and a curved end portion, and the outer end of said main portion is bifurcated. The other end of the link member I2 is extended into said bifurcated end of the bar I4 and is pivotally connected thereto by means of a pin I6. Intermedi- 4ate the ends of the main portion of the bar I4 there is extended from the bar I4 a substantially flat lug portion I 8, which extends into the bifurcated end of the lug portion 6 and is pivoted thereto by means of the pin I0. Further pivot pins 20 and 22 are crosswise extended through end portions of the parts 2 and I4, and grooves 24 and 26 are extended into those portions of the parts 2 and I4 respectively through which extend the pins 2li and 22. Flat lug portions `28 and 30 extend from curved jaw members 32 and 34 respectively into the grooves 24 and 26 and have the pins 20 and 22 extended therethrough. The concave sides 36 and 38 of the curved jaw members 32 and 34 are provided with any suitable serrations, or are knurled, for facilitating the gripping of a pipe 40 or the like. By moving the wrench shown in Figure 2 in a clockwise direction around the axis of the pipe 40 the latter will be grasped and held rmly by the .jaws 32 and 34, while a movement in the opposite direction immediately releases the jaws from the pipe 40. The jaws 32 and 34 can be exchanged easily and quickly for jaws of different dimensions if the wrench is to be used for tubular objects of different diameters. Thus one and the same wrench with several pairs of jaws of differ ent sizes can be used for a large variety of cylindrical or annular objects, the pulling out and replacing of the pins 20 and 22 being a simple matter for a mechanic.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
A device of the character described comprising a longitudinal handle having a groove laterally extended into one of its end portions and having rst and second lug portions right angularly disposed to the longitudinal axis of the handle and laterally extended therefrom at that side which has said groove, the ends of said iirst and sec ond lug portions being bifurcated, the iirst lug portion being located intermediate the ends of the handle while the second lug portion is longer than the first lug portion and is located in spaced relation thereto and to that end of the handle which is provided with said groove, a bar having a curved portion and a substantially straight portion whose outer end is bifurcated and said straight portion having intermediate its ends a 3 iug portion extended into and pivoted to the biturcated end of the second lug portion of said handle while the curved portion of said bar is provided with a groove extended thereinto from its inner side and facing the groove in said handle, a link member whose ends are extended into and pivoted to the bifurcated ends of said bar and said rst lug portion of the handle respectively, and a pair of curved jaws each of which has a concave side provided with seri-ations and a convex side provided with a at lug portion, the lug portion of one of said jaws being extended into the groove in said handle and pivoted to REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the le of this patent:
