ADJUSTABLE QUICK-ACTING PIPE WRENCH Filed June 17, 1952" IN V EN TOR.
(I V- Jensen Patented July 6, 1954 UNIT ED STAT ES PATENT OFFICE ADJUSTABLE QUICK-ACTING PIPE WRENCH Jens W. Jensen, Tonasket, Wash.
I Application June 1'7, 1952, Serial No. 293,979
1- Claim. 1
My invention relates to, improvements in wrenches for use in turning orunscrewing round or cylindrical objects, as gas pipes, cylindrical rods and the like, and the present invention relates more specifically to an improvement over my Patent No. 2,596,559. The more important objects of the present invention are: first to provide a wrench which may be readily adjusted to operate perfectly upon different sizes of pipe; second, to provide a means, whereby the grip of the wrench upon the object to be handled will be readily made perfect, and still may be readily released when the movement of the wrench is reversed.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a wrench of the character described which is simple in construction, consisting of only a few inexpensive parts which can be assembled easily and quickly, but which is also durable, comparatively light in weight, handy in use, and well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel'details of construction and combinations of parts hereafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing a preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a side view of a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the same; and, Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on the line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing the numeral 2 denotes a longitudinal, preferably straight handle from one side of which extends a lug portion 4, which preferably is right-angularly disposed to the longitudinal axis of the handle 2. The outer end section of the lug portion 4 preferably is bifurcated and a threaded bore 5 (Figure 1) is extended through the handle 2. A threaded bolt 6 is screwed into the bore 5, and a pivot pin 8 is extended through the lug portion 4. A ball portion It) is provided at one end. of the bolt 6. One end of a link member I2 extends into the bifurcated end section of the lug portion 4, and the pin 8 is extended therethrough.
A bar l4 has a substantially straight main portion and a curved end portion, and the outer end of said main portion is bifurcated. The other end of the link member I2 is extended into said bifurcated end of the bar I 4 and is pivotally connected thereto by means of a pin it. Intermediate the ends of the main portion of the bar I4 is extended therethrough a threaded bore l1, and a threaded bolt [8 is screwed into the bore l1. Further pivot pins 20 and 22 are crosswise extended through end portions of the parts 2 and I4, and grooves 24 and 26 are extended into those portions of the parts 2' and I4 respectively through which extend the pins 20 and 22. Flat lug portions 28 and 30 extend from curved jaw members 32 and 34 respectively into the grooves 24 and 26 and have the pins 20 and 22 extended therethrough. The concave sides 36 and 38 of the curved jaw members 32 and 34 are provided with any suitable serrations, or are knurled for facilitating the gripping of a pipe 40 or the like. An internally threaded hollow head portion 42 is provided at one end of the bolt l8, and a socket member 44 is screwed thereinto, so that the bolts. 6 and 18 are pivotally connected to each other by means of the member 44 and. the portions l0 and 42. By moving the wrench shown in Figure 1 in a clockwise direction around the axis of the pipe 40 the latter will be grasped and held firmly by the jaws 32 and 34, while a movement in the opposite direction immediately releases the pipe 40. The jaws 32 and 34 can be exchanged easily and quickly for jaws of different dimensions if the wrench is to be used for tubular objects of different diameters. Thus one and the same wrench with several pairs of jaws of different sizes can be used for a large variety of cylindrical or annular objects, the pulling out and replacing of the pins 20 and 22 being a simple matter for a mechanic. Moreover, by screwing the bolts 3 and it, one of which has a right-hand thread while the other has a lefthand thread, more or less into or through the parts 2 and I4, the range of the distance between the jaws 32 and 34 can be altered, so that the device can be used for a wide variety of differently dimensioned pipes or the like.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and difierent embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claim is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
An adjustable quick acting jaw wrench comprising a longitudinal handle having a groove laterally extended into one of its end portions and having a lug portion intermediate its ends and right angularly disposed to the longitudinal axis of the handle and laterally extended therefrom at that side which has said groove, the extending end of the lug portion being bifurcated, and the handle having a threaded cross-bore located intermediate said groove and said lug portion, a bar having a curved portion and a substantially straight portion, an outer end of said straight portion being bifurcated and said straight portion having intermediate its ends a threaded cross-bore while the curved portion of said bar is provided with a groove extended thereinto from its inner side and facing the groove in said handle, a link member whose ends are extended into and pivoted to the bifurcated ends of said bar and said lug portion of the handle respectively, a first bolt having a spherical head portion and a shaft portion screwed into the threaded cross bore in said handle, a second bolt having a shaft portion screwed into the threaded cross bore in said bar and having a head portion provided with an internal thread, a socket member, to which the head portion of said first bolt is pivoted, being screwed into the head portion of said second bolt, and a pair of curved jaws each of which has a concave side provided with serrations and aconvex side provided with a flat lug portion, the lug portion of one of the jaws being extended into the groove in the curved portion of said bar and pivoted to said bar, and the lug portion of the other jaw being extended into the groove in the end portion of said handle and pivoted to said handle.
