w. c. WALLIS V WRENCH Filed Feb. 16, 1926 I If mmum i\'\\\\\\ 17 Patented Oct. 30, 192 8.
' WALTERS. WALLIS, or CLOVIS, New MEXICO.
wiainvon.
Application filed-February 16, 1926. Serial No. 88 621;
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and especially to that form of wrench commonly known as the open end type, and which contemplates the provision of companion halves, pivotally associated adjacent one pair of jaw faces while the oppo site end having ,adjusting means interposed therebetween whereby the adjustment upon one set or pair of jaw .faces will simultaneously set the faces :upon the opposite end.
Another object of my invention resides in v the provision of the adjusting means conof my wrench.
stituting a pair of threaded shanks received within aligned openings arranged in the opposite sides of the members composing the wrench, the intermeeting ends of the shanks provide a universal joint of association and include a relatively enlarged knurledv portion at this juncture whereby the shanks will not bind within the members incident to the adjustment of the wrench.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further'includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section,
Figure 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Figure 1. I
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary end elevation of a modified form of my invention.
Figure 5 is a perspective of a swivel form ing the subject matter of the modified form of my invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference characters 10 and 11 indicate companion handle members respectively: each of which having enlarged portions 12 adjacent one end for the reception of a pivot pin 13 therethrough whereby the j aw faces 14 may be readily swung to open and closed positions. The opposite ends ofthe companion handles 10 and 11 have larger aw faces or jaws 15, one of which provides a cutout portion 16 upon its innerside,
the purpose of which will be presently apparent. a
In order to provide means to facilitate relative adjustment of the respective j aws14 and cutout portion 16 of the 15 respectivelyzI provideshanks 17 and -.18 having right and left hand threads thereon and iinbedded or threaded within transverse ly disposed openings provided upon the ing nersides of the jaws 15. The shanklS hasa relatively enlarged knurled portion 19 upon its inner end which provides a socket 20 there-f in for the r'eceptionof the inner end of the shank 17 in order that a pivot pin 21 may be positioned within the socket whereby a pivot or universal joint is provided at this juncture and which obviates any possibility of the respective shanks 17 and 18 from becoming ammed or d storted w thin the transversely disposed openingsprovided in the opposite" and innersides of the jaw faces 15 while relatively adjusting the same.
As clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing the knurled portion 19 formed integrally upon the inner end of the shank 18 positioned and adapted for rotation in. either direction within the cutout portion 16 provided upon the innerside of the relatively enlarged jaw provided upon the corresponding end of the handle member 11.
In Figures and 5 of the drawing, I have illustrated a modified form of my invention, the main characteristic, differences, and departure constituting the subject matter thereof being the provision of a locking or securing means for the adjusting shank to be presently described as follows:
As clearly illustrated in Figure 40f the drawing the handle members 10 and 11 re i spectively have jaw faces 12 upon their outer ends, the jaw faces upon the outer end of the handle member 11 includes a cutout portion 13 similar in construction and capable of being used in a like manner to that of the preferred form of my invention.
Each of the jaw faces or jaws 12 have elongatea slotted portions 1-1 therein and registering with threaded openings extending transversely through the handle members 101 and 11 and the respective jaws 12 there for w iereby the oppositely threaded shanks 15 extending in opposite directions from an enlarged knurled portion 16 formed integrally therewith and at the junctures of their inner ends is positioned within cutout portion 13 as illustrated.
Positioned within the vertically disposed swivels 17 having threaded openings 18 pro-- elongated slotted portions 1 1 are nutsfor llO vided centrally thereof for the reception of the opposite and outer ends of the shanks 15 and owing to their looseness, that is, the side and end play incident to the positioning thereof will obviate any apparent binding of the shanks 15 when the jaws 12 are moved to ex treme open and closed positions.
It will thus be noted from the foregoing description and accompanying drawing that a novel form of adjustable open end wrench is defined, capable of functioning in the manner as described and owing to the construction thereof may be made in various sizes to correspond with its work and prove of great value to machinists and mechanics in so far as a whole set of different sized open end wrenches may not be required to complete an outfit of tools and consequently cheaper for maintenance.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed is:
A wrench comprising pivotally connected handle members provided with oppositely dis posed jaw faces, one of said handle members being provided with a cut-out portion adjacent the jaw face therefor. shanks threaded within the handle members, an enlarged elongated portion carried upon the inner end of one of the shanks and disposed within the c11ti11t )o1'tio1i of the particular handle member, said portion being provided with a socket opening within the free end thereof and ineluding, beveled peripheral edges communicating therewith, the adjacent end of the remaining shank reposing within said socket, and a pivot pin passing through said end and the opposed side walls of the enlarged portion to permit relative adjustment to the handle members and to relieve binding: action at the juncture of association of the respective shanks.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
