Application filed April 20,1926. Serial No. llllllfilllll.
This invention relates to on improved wrench and has more specific reference to one wherein the worlr enenging means is luountcdhv u unirersnl joint on the openailingmeans for the purpose of permitting convenient leveru ze to he obtained on cops :ind bolls which are otherwise dilficult of access.
llrietiv. the invention eomprisesn tool includingf crossed pivotully connected handles. the outer ends ot which have operating conncction with n clamping hand surrounding: or hell connector or joint. and this connector is provided with n socket for reception of n shrink ol' the Work engaging head or element which is preferably in the form of n reuiovnlole spanner Wrench.
The object is to provide a tool of this kind wherein by simply pressing the handles of the tool together, the clamping hand may he pressed firmly nn'ninst the Ion-ll connector to rnnintnin the spanner Wrench in any position to which it has been moved thus allowing the sponner Wrench to be engaged with the Work end the handles to he adjusted with respect to adjacent portions which ran der the work otherwise inaccessible.
' An iniportnnt advantage is derived lay providing 'tie hell connector with .1 central soclret of polygonal cross section and using it multitude ot' spanner wrenches of dil'l'er ent sizes, the worlr engnging head loeiuc disposed all right singles to the shonlr of the wrench nnd permitting, the spanner wrench to he changed from time to time in order to ncconnnodnte the ohiect being acted on.
Uther lectures nnd advantages of the inn vention will hecornc :ipporent from the following description and drawing.
to the nccoinpnnyin r drawing forming a port ot' this npplicntion and in which like nuinernls tllfl employed to designate like ports throughout the some:
Figure l, is on incon'iplele view ot' the Wrench showing one of the handles of 'the tool removed. and portions in section to disclose the details of construction plainly.
Figure 2 is :1 plan view of the entire wrench.
Figures 3 end 4- nre cross sections token n 'iproiiiumtely upon the planes oi the lines l-?l Itl'ltl l-- lof Figure 2 respectively.
The operating" tool is generally designated hr the reference character 1, end it Will be seen thnt this comprises p. handle 2 having :1 suhrtnntiully Ushuped heiid at its outer end. This head serves to provide a pair of jaws i). lii'otcdnt lon the head is o coperating handle 5. This handle 5 disposed in crossed relation and is associated with one of the jaws 5-3 as llKliCtllOll in Figure :2. This tool 1 serves as on operating means for compressing and releasing an elastic clumping hand 6 which surrounds the spherical hull connector i", at the point indicated in Figure at. It will he noted that the tree ends of the hand ure curved as in dlculcd at the point 8 und confined between the oppositely curved jaws 3; lntcrposed hetwccn the hand ends and the jnws are rivets 9. lhe rivets have heads on their ends which receive the bond ends and jaws thcrehctween :is shown plainly in Figure 3. One of the rivets has its upper headed end connected with the free end otthe handle 5 as shown in Figures 2 and The hall 7 is provided with n central hole of square cross section which receives the correspond ingly shaped Siltlllll'. 10 of the spanner wrench 1i. It will he soon from the foregoing that; h pressing the handles 2 and 5 toward eon other, the left hood rivet 9 \vill'force the adjacent end of the clamping hand 7 t0- wurd the coinplementiil bond end and thus firmly clamp the band about the hell to hold it firmly. In. using the device the spanner wrench 11 is first en cgnged with the part to be operated on and the operating handles are ndjustdd shout the hell until they assume a convenient operating position. Then the handles are pressed together to clamp the hand and make a single unit of the device. Then it uni be operated in the usual manner. By releasing thenrip on the handle the In prectice a number of s tmnner wrenches are provided having standardized shanks and different sizes of heads, thus permitting the device to accommodate different sizes of holt/s, nuts, and the like. i
It is believed that by considering the de scription in connection with the drawings, persons familiar with inventions of this class will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the same. In View of this, a more lengthy description sary.
Minor changes coming within the field is thought unneceshand is automatically released and a 1 new grip may he obtained.
of invention claimed may be reserted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the same. I
' Having thus described the invention, what I cieim new and desire to secure by Letiers Patent is 1. In a wrench of the class described, an operating device comprising; pivotelly connetted. crossed handles, a bali connector, a clamping device associated with said cnnector and with the outer ends of said handies, and a work engaging element carried hy's'aid connector.
2; In a wrench of ihe class described, an eperating device comprising; a pair of cross wot-ally connected handles, a clamping nandliaving operating connection with khe eceser onter ends-of the handles, a ball joint, said bend surrounding said joint, and work engaging means associated with said joini.
3. In a Wrench of the class described, a ball joint having a central socket of polygonal cross section, a spanner wrench comprising a work engaging head and a shank, said shank being disposed at right angles to the head and being fitted snugly into the opening in said lali joint, a compressible clamping band surrounding said hall joint, and an ope 'aiing device for moving the free ends of he band toward each other for clamping said band tightly about said hall.
in testimony whereof I afiix my signatun ROBERT E. ASHCROFT.
