Class 61 In a spanner or wrench having a shank 1 carrying a curved toe piece 2 which provides the pressure jaw and a pivoted tension jaw 3 having a nut-engaging flat, the thrust between the tension jaw and the pressure jaw is transmitted between two abutting segmental surfaces on these two members to relieve the pivot pin from strain. As shown in Fig. 1, segmental lugs 3a projecting from both sides of the pivotable portion of the jaw 3 engage with segmental surfaces 1a on the arms of the bifurcated shank. The distance between the bifurcations is enlarged at 1b to allow introduction of the jaw 3. A loosely fitting pivot pin 4 is inserted. The toe piece 2 is secured as by rivets to the ends of the arms of the bifurcated shank. A leaf spring 5 maintains the jaws in closed position. In a modification segmental lugs on the tension jaw engage with internal bosses on the arms of the bifurcated shank. In another modification annular bosses on the tension jaw are centrally recessed to receive bosses on the arms of the bifurcated shank, the split ends of the shank forming the toe piece.
