Abstract
684,240. Wrenches. DAVIS, J. H. E., and WRAIGHT & CO., Ltd., F. L. Oct. 6, 1950 [Oct. 18, 1949], No. 25481/49. Class 61 (iii). In a wrench having an inner jaw 3 on the end of a handle lever 1 and an outer jaw 5 comprising a C - shaped arm pivoted to the handle and provided with a dihedral recess having gripping faces 12, 12a, the curvature of the convex gripping surface 10 of the inner jaw is such that the tangent at the point of contact of a pipe gripped between the jaws converges outwardly towards the outer face 12 of the dihedral recess in all positions of adjustment of the jaws. The gripping face 12 is perpendicular to a radial line passing through the pivot axis and the corner of the dihedral recess, and the normal at the point of contact of the pipe with the gripping surface 10 meets the face 12 at a point intermediate the ends thereof, the gripping pressure thus being taken between the faces 10 and 12, leaving the pivot pin free of strain. The inner jaw 3 comprising a hardened steel block fixed in the channel section lever 1 by rivets 4 is provided with a segmental recess 8 concentric with the pivotal axis of the jaw 5. A knuckle 6 on the jaw 5 is held in the recess 8 between the cheeks of the lever by the pivot 9. The jaws are urged into closed position by a leaf spring 13 which enables the wrench to be rotated with a ratchetlike action.
