G. H TURNER. WRENCH, ORIGINAL FILED JUNE 7, I919v U c wuawtoz flz'bqsan E, Tamer Patented na was.
uirnn s'rrss GIBSON H. TURNER, OF ELECTRA, TEXAS.
WRENCH;
Application filed June 7, 1919, Serial No. 302,443. Renewed June 23, 1922. Serial No. 570,383.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GIBSON H. TUnNnn,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Electra, in. the county of \Vichita and State oi Texas, have invented new and useful Improveinentsin Wrenches, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and particularlyto that class oi'wrenches known as pipe wrenches? An object of the invention is the provislon of a wrenchol this character which will automatically adjust itself to the diameter of a pipe, the construction being such as to permit of its use upon pipes oi various diameters. j i
Another object is the provision of a wrench which includes a sliding jaw held. in
position by a sliding pivot connection of novel formation, so as to decrease thecost of manufacture and increase the width of the opening of the jaws.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings. r
In the drawings: v i
Figure 1 is'a side elevation ofa wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention and shown in closed position.
Figure 2 is a similarview with the jaws of the wrench open and parts broken away to more clearly show the sliding pivot connection of one ofthe aws.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the wrench is shown comprising with substantially right angular extension 11. Pivotallysecure'd to the outer end of this extension is jaw member 12, which may, if desired, be provided with an auxiliary gripping element 13, suitably secured thereto and having the usual serrated toothed gripping face. s
Pivotally and slidably secured to the extension 11, is a jaw 14, the outer end oi the jaw being formed with an offset extension 15, which is also provided with. a serrated or toothed gripping face. The inner end of the jaw 14 is bifurcated to receive the extension 11,the arms 16 formed by the I handle 10, which is provided the extension, as indicated at 19, a shoulder I at each end of the notch acting as stops to limit the movement of the pin 17 This pin is held Within the notch through the medium of: a plate 20, one end of which is secured to the extensionnear the outer end thereof by means of a screw 21, or other suitable fastening device. The opposite end of the plate is preferably provided with a right angular extension 22, to provide an attaching ear for the passage of a screw 23, which serves to secure this end of the plate to the handle 11. i
The jaw 12 is also bifurcated and straddles the extension 11, and has securedthereto through the inediunrofscrews or analogous fastening devices 2 1, a strap or band This strap or band passes around the aw is and acts as-a guide.
It is preferred to provide the pin 17 with.
a roller 26, so as to reduce friction inthe operation of the wrench.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what claimed is:
A wrench comprising a substantially L shaped handle to provide an olfset extension. a jaw member positively pivoted upon said extension, 2. second jaw member capable of longitudinal sliding mov ent with re;
spect to the rst men ioned jaw member, a strap secured to the positively pivoted jaw ieinber and en ageable with the other jaw member to provide a guide, a pin carried by the last mentioned. jaw member, a notch 'forinedin the under side ot the offset ex tension of the handle," and a plate extending across the notch to provide a slot for the reception of the pin ofthe second jaw member; to define a slotting pivotal connection with the handle. 1
In testimony whereof I aflix my si nature. GIBSON H. TUR ER.
