Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1911.
Application filed June 17, 1911. Serial No. 633,708.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. REBAGLIATI, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Lytton, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches and the principal object of the same is to provide a wrench in which there is provided a novel type of adjusting means and also to so mount the adjusting means that a spring which controls the same may be adjusted.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of the improved wrench, the movable jaw being shown in section. Fig.2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified type of locking device for the movable jaw. Fig. 3 is a View in section along the line 83, in Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that this invention comprises a handle 1 which is preferably rectangular in cross section and at one end of which a stationary jaw 2 is formed, Figs. 1 and 2 showing the modified types of stationary jaws. The movable jaw 3 is provided with a central longitudinally extending opening 4: which has one portion formed into a pocket 5. The wall of the pocket is sloping so that the diameter of the pocket is greater in the interior than at the end of the jaw 3. An angular opening 6 is formed through the edge of the jaw 3 and communicates with the pocket 5 about mid-way its length and a latch 7 having a sleeve 8 intermediate its length is pivotally mounted upon a pin 9 which extends transversely through the opening 10 which communicates with the opening 6. The inner portion 11 of the latch is positioned at an angle to the outer portion and extends well into the pocket 5 the purpose of which will be brought out hereinafter. A friction roller 12 is mounted in the pocket 5 and is of such diameter that it will be freely movable when at the inner portion of the pocket, but will between the sloping wall of the pocket and the handle 1 when moved toward the outer port-ion of the pocket. The roller is normally held toward the outer portion of the pocket by means of a sprlng which is mounted between the roller and the inner wall. In Fig. 1 this spring comprises a coil 13 mounted upon a pin ll and two arms 15 and 16. The arm 15 is curved and engages the rear wall of the pocket while the arm 16 engages the roller 12 and holds the roller normally in a position to lock the movable jaw. In Fig. 2 the spring comprises a coil spring 17 which is mounted in a passage 18 communicating with the rear portion of the pocket and is held under tension by means of a plug 19 which is threaded in the passage 18. By having this plug 19 threaded in the passage 18 the tension of the spring 17 can be regulated so that when the spring 17 weakens it can be strengthened by threading the plug farther into the passage way.
In use the latch 7 is rocked upon its pivot and moves the roller 12 inwardly against the tension of the spring so that the movable jaw may slide freely upon the handle. After the jaw has been adjusted to the desired place the latch is released and the spring moves the roller outwardly so that it jams between the handle and the sloping wall of the pocket and tightly locks the movable jaw in the adjusted position.
WVhat I claim as my invention is l. A wrench comprising a handle, a static-nary jaw formed at one end of said handle, a movable jaw slidably mounted upon said handle and provided with a longitudinally extending opening through which said handle passes, and with a longitudinally extending pocket leading from said central opening, said movable jaw being also provided with an opening communicating with said pocket, a latch pivotally mounted in said last mentioned openv ing and extending into said pocket, a spring mounted in said pocket, and a locking roller mounted in said pocket between said spring and the inner portion of said latch, said spring normally holding said roller in a position to lock said movable jaw, and said latch being adapted to be rocked to move said roller to release said movable jaw.
2. A wrench comprising a handle, a stationary jaw at one end of said handle, a movable jaw slidably mounted upon said handle and provided with a longitudinally extending pocket and with an opening communicating with said pocket, a latch pivotally mounted in said last mentioned opening and extending into said pocket, said latch comprising an angular bar having a pivot sleeve formed intermediate its length, a spring mounted in said pocket, and a looking roller in said pocket and positioned between said spring and the inner portion of said latch.
3. A wrench comprising a handle, a stationary jaw at one end of said handle, a movable jaw slidably mounted upon said handle, said movable jaw being provided with a pocket and with a longitudinally extending opening communicating with said pocket, a spring mounted in said opening and extending into said pocket, a locking roller positioned in said pocket and contacting with said spring, a plug threaded in the outer portion of said 0 ening contacting with said spring to regu ate the tension of the same, and means for moving said roller against the tension of said spring to release said movable aw.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK B. REBAGLIATI.
