PIPE-WRENCIL Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
Application filed April 18, 1917. Serial No. 162,914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN W. BAUMAN and 1mm VV. BAUMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Sassamansville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe wrenches the object of the invention being to provide an improved pipe wrench which is strong and durable and which can be readily and quickly adjusted to engage and disengage the work.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of a pipe wrench constructed and arranged in accordance with our invention and show ing the same in normal position with the sliding disengaged so that the sliding jaw may be readily adjusted with reference to the relatively fixed jaw.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line L of Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 and at are sectional views showing modifications in the construction. of our improved wrench.
Fig. is an elevation partly in sect-ion of another modified form of our invention.
Fig.6 is a similar view of another modified form of our improved wrench.
Referring to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a lever 1 is provided which has a relatively fixed jaw 2 detachably secured to the inner end thereof and extending across the same, said jaw having a channel in which the inner end of the lever is arranged and said jaw being also provided with teeth 3 to engage a pipe or other work. In one edge of the lever at a point a suitable distance therefrom is a dovetailed notch 4 in which is secured the correspondingly shaped tongue 5 of a ratchet member 6 the outer edge of whi h is curved and is provided with ratchet teeth 7. v
A guiding and connecting element 8 is provided which is here shown as having spaced side walls 9 and a back wall 10 which connects the side walls. The lever 1 is arranged between the side walls and the said guiding and connecting element is pivotally mounted on the lever by means. of a pivot pin 11 which engages in alining openings with which the lever andthe side walls are provided. Hence the guiding and connecting element is pivotally arranged on the lever.
connecting elementon the lever. For this purpose one of the side walls 9 is provided with a curved slot 12 which is concentric with the pivot 11 and the lever 1 has a stud 13 which operates in said. slot. The front sides of the walls 9 are here shown connected together by a cross and stop bar 14.
The movable jaw 15 of the wrench is provided with ratchet teeth 16 which are arranged'opposite the teeth 3 of the relatively fixed aw 2 and said movable jaw has an arm 17 which extends through and is slidable in the guiding and connecting element and is provided on its outer side with ratchet teeth 18. The back wall 10 of the guiding and connecting element is provided with an opening through which the engaging end of a dog 19 extends, the said dog being pivotally mounted. as at 20 between. lugs 21 on said back wall and being adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with the ratchet teeth 18 to secure the movable jaw in any desired adjusted position and at any required distance from the relatively fixed jaw 2, as will be understood. Suitable guide bars 22, 23 connect the side walls 9 of the guiding and connecting element and are arranged on the front side of the arm 17 to hold said arm in the back or rear portion of said guiding and connecting element. The front side of the arm 18 is provided with a rack 24 the teeth of which may be engaged with those of the member 6 when the lever 1. is substantially parallel with the arm 17. A spring 25 bears between the rear side of the lever and the bar 22 and serves to normally turn the guiding and connecting element on its pivot 11 to disengage the rack 24 from the member 6 and thereby permit the jaw 15 to be readily adjusted with reference to the jaw 2 as required, and to permit the wrench to be applied to or released from the pipe or other work.
When the wrench has been applied to the work the wrench is turned forwardly in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, thereby causing the member 6 to be engaged with the rack 24 and hence firmly and securely locking the arm of the jaw 15 to the guiding and connecting element at the same Suitable means are providedto limit I the pivotal movement of the guiding and time that the jaws are firmly gripped on opposite sides of the pipe or other work.
In Fig. 3 we show a modified construction of our improved pipe wrench in which the rack 24, the member 6 and the pivoted dog 20 are dispensed with and a rack dog 26 is substituted and which may be moved into or out of engagement with a rack l8 on the outer side of the lever arm 17 of the movable jaw 15 by means of a set screw 27.
In Fig. 4 we show another modified con struction of our invention in which there is a rack 18 on one side of the arm 17 and a rack dog 26 is provided in the corresponding side of the guiding and connecting element for engagement with said rack, to lock the movable jaw in adjusted position.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings we show another modified form of our invention in which the lever comprises a pair of members 1, 1 pivotally connected together as at 28 and also to the guidinn and connecting ele ment 8, the member 1 being provided with the ratchet member 6 and the lever member 1 being provided with the relatively fixed jaw 2.
In Fig. 6 we show another modified construction in which the relatively fixed jaw 2 is secured to the guiding and connecting element 8 and a spring 29 is provided in the slot 12 to engage the stud 13 and thereby normally keep the rack arm of the movable jaw out of engagement with the rack element 6".
While we have herein shown and described several embodiments of our invention we would have it understood that other changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of our invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described our invention, we claim In a pipe wrench,'a lever having a jaw at its inner end, a guiding and connecting element nivotall mounted on the lever and including spaced guide bars, a movable jaw having an arm slidable in the guiding and vonnecting element, the said arm having teeth in its side adj acent, to the lever and also having teeth in its outer side, a dog mounted on the outer side of said element and arranged to engagethe last named teeth, to adjustably secure the movable arm in the guiding and connecting element, a toothed member fixed to the lever and arranged to engage the first named teeth of said arm between. the spaced guide bars and thereby secure the movable jaw when the lever is in one position, and a spring interposed between one of the guide bars and the lever and acting on the guiding and connecting element to normallv hold the latter in the position required to disengage the toothed arm from the said toothed member.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
