Description
0, 1955 c. H. STRANG 2,716,366
ADJUSTABLE P I PE WRENCH Filed July 15, 1954 IN VEN TOR.
United States Patent 1 2,716,366 ADJUSTABLE PIPE WRENCH Charles H. Strang, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application July 15, 1954, Serial No. 443,500 2 Claims. (Cl. 81-98) This invention relates to pipe wrenches.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an adjustable pipe wrench which may be employed in areas of limited clearance and wherein the jaws may be adjusted relative to each other by a sleeve rotatably mounted on the handle.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an adjustable pipe wrench which includes novel means for mounting the stationary jaw member.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 4--4 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, rep-- resents an elongated shank provided with teeth 11 adjacent the handle portion 12 thereof, the end of the shank 10 remote from handle 12 being integrally formed with an inclined extension 13 having a bore 14 therethrough, substantially as illustrated.
A stationary jaw 15 is integrally formed with a shank portion 16 which passes through the bore 14 and which is retained therein by means of a pin 17, the end of the shank 16 remote from jaw 15 being integrally formed with a laterally extending portion 18 adapted to abut the lower end of the extension 13.
A moving jaw 19 is integrally formed with a shank 20 having a longitudinal bore 21 therethrough and within which is slidably disposed the shank 10, the jaw 19 being adapted to cooperate with the jaw 15 to secure therebetween a pipe 21 (Fig. 2).
As a means of adjusting the jaw 19 relative to the jaw 15, an elongated sleeve 22 knurled on its outer surface to facilitate the rotation thereof is internally threaded and screwed onto the threaded portion 11 of shank 10 adjacent to the shank 20. The end of the shank 20 adjacent the sleeve 22 is provided with an annular groove 23 and an annular ridge 24, the annular groove 23 receiving therewithin rotatably a circular flange 25 provided on the end of the sleeve 22, the ridge 24 being rotatably received within an annular groove 26 provided in sleeve 22 adjacent the flange 25 whereby to rotatably connect the shank 20 with sleeve 22 and to insure the movement of the jaw 19 in the same direction as the sleeve 22.
It will be noted that, since the pin 17 holds the jaw 15 in place, the pipe 21 is first clamped between the jaws 15 and 19 by operating the sleeve 22, and is then rotated by swinging the handle 12 clockwise (as viewed in either Fig. 1 or Fig. 2), such movement of the handle 12 bringing the lip 18 into position against the end of the extension 13 so that the latter elements relieve the pin 17 of most of the stress. The sleeve 22 is of elongated length whereby to provide greater strength. Thus, by rotating the sleeve 22, the jaws 15 and 19 may be brought together about the pipe 21 in an improved manner. 7
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the function and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
