738,962. Wrenches. COMPAGNIE DE PONT-A-MOUSSON. Dec. 15, 1953 [Dec. 17, 1952; Oct. 15, 1953], No. 34874/53. Class 61. A pipe wrench comprising a lever 1 having at one end a fixed jaw 2 and a jaw 3 pivoted to the lever adjacent the fixed jaw, is provided with a deformable arcuate gripping band extending between the jaws, one end of the band being attached to the fixed jaw 2, the other end being either attached to the pivoted jaw 3 or left free. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the gripping band 11 comprises a spring steel, arc-shaped blade 12 having on one or both faces a covering of rubber or other elastic material provided with projections 16 on the inner face. The eyed ends 13 of the band are attached to the bifurcated ends of the jaws by pivot pins 9, 10. In a modification the ends of the band are riveted to the arcuate ends of the jaws. The gripping band is slightly greater in length than half the circumference of the pipe to be gripped, the ends of the band in its free state subtending an angle of 110 degrees at the centre of curvature of the band. In another modification, Figs. 8 and 10, one end of the gripping band 27 is secured by a pivot pin 26a to the fixed jaw 22. The band comprises one or more chains 29 secured to a tube 28 to form an eye for the passage of the pin 26a and having an elastic covering moulded thereto. The inner face of the gripping band has projections 31, the outer face being provided with grooves or ridges in or against which the gripping nose 25 of the pivoted jaw 23 is supported. The pivoted jaw is urged towards the fixed jaw by a spring 32. Instead of the spring blade 32 a compression spring may be provided or two spiral springs may be wound around the pivot 24 which is fixed to the handle 21.
