Class 61 An adjustable wrench comprises a head which carries a fixed jaw and a jaw which is movable in relation thereto by means of a lever pivoted in the wrench head, the movable jaw having a guide, tongue extending longitudinally into the wrench head, and wherein a part of the wrench is arranged to subjected to spring actions which operate in opposed directions so that longitudinally opposed spring loads are exerted on the guide tongue. As shown in Fig. 4, the movable jaw 3 is provided with a guide tongue 3<SP>1</SP> which extends into the cylindrical guide-way 4 of the spanner head 1. Cylindrical spiral springs 5, 6 are disposed at both sides of the guide tongue. A lever 8 pivoted at 9 to the head of the wrench has a bifurcated end 8<SP>1</SP> which engages with a tooth 3<SP>11</SP> on the guide tongue of the movable jaw. In a modification, Fig. 5, a worm 12 is rotatably mounted in the head on the shaft 11, the worm engaging a rack 13 cut in the guiding tongue 3' and the worm being longitudinally movable on the shaft 11. A sleeve 16 slidably mounted on the shaft 11 adjacent the worm is engaged by a tooth 17 on the lever 8. The worm and sleeve are disposed between spiral pressure springs 5, 6 which surround the worm shaft and bear against the head of the wrench. In another modification, Fig. 8 the circular disc-shaped head 19 of the pivoted lever 8 engages a circular cutout 20 in the guide tongue 3<SP>1</SP>. A locking lever 22 pivoted at 23 in a recess in the fixed jaw 2 has a locking pin 25 which engages a rack provided on the guide tongue 3<SP>1</SP> on the movable jaw. The lever is spring loaded on each side by springs 26, 27 respectively. In another modification, Fig. 13, a leaf spring 22<SP>1</SP> is clamped to the fixed jaw 2 and engages a rack 31 on the tongue of the movable jaw which is thereby subjected to spring actions in opposite directions depending on the direction of displacement of the guide tongue from its normal position. Any of the spring actions may be provided by a resilient mass of rubber or the like.
