[Also in Group XXV] In adjustable spanners, wrenches and vices having one jaw fixed to a body or shank provided with a toothed rack, the movable jaw is adjustable on the shank by a conical worm which engages with the rack teeth and has its rotational axis inclined thereto, the smaller end of the worm being directed away from the movable jaw. The slidable jaw 39 of a spanner, Fig. 3, has a conical worm 43 which engages with teeth on the shank 32, the worm being supported by a spindle 48 held frictionally or keyed to the jaw. For quick adjustment finger pressure applied to a leaf spring 56 riveted to the jaw 39 causes the jaw to pivot on the rivet head 53 and disengage the worm from the rack. In a modified construction, Fig. 5 (not shown), the shank of the fixed jaw is shortened and the strap member of the jaw 39 is extended to form a handle. In a pipe wrench, Fig. 6, the movable jaw comprises a member 61 slidable on the shank having pivoted thereto a gripping member 65 provided with an operating handle 67. In a modification, Fig. 7, the gripping member 72 is pivoted to one end of a link 73 the other end of which is pivoted either to the sliding member 71 as shown or to the supporting spindle 63 of the worm 62. In a further modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the movable jaw comprises two laterally slidable members pivotally connected by a link. In a bench vice, Fig. 10, a conical worm 95 operated by a key 100 is attached to the movable jaw 92 which is riveted to a metal strap 93 slidable on the toothed body portion 83. The key comprises two metal bars having C-shaped ends provided with pegs 105 to engage holes 99 in the sides of a peripheral groove in the worm.
